NEW ROSS — Miriam Gray, 77, a former resident of New Ross and the first woman elected to public office in Montgomery County, died Wednesday afternoon in the Masonic Home at Franklin. She was a member of New Ross United Methodist Church and Athens Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She served as Montgomery County recorder from 1922 to 1932 and at her retirement in 1969 was employed by Ladoga Federal Savings & Loan. She was born Jan. 29, 1898, at Crawfordsville, a daughter of Frank and Nora Schweitzer Davis. She married Ward Gray on Sept. 7. 1935. He died in 1967. Surviving are four cousins, Mrs. Frank Davidson of Crawfordsville, Louise Harvey of Terre Haute, Ted Schweitzer of Lafayette and Richard Fisher of Hillside, Ill. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Walker Funeral Home at Jamestown. Burial will be in New Ross Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today.--waw
